Employers make you jump through hoops Empty Employers make you jump through hoops

Post by Starbucksaholic Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:05 pm

What is the primary reason most people work? To pay the bills and have as much of what they want in life that they can figure out to get. So why all the stupid interview questions such as:

Why do you want to work here?
Tell me about yourself?
Where do you see yourself five years from now?

If a back ground check shows you are not a danger to yourself or others, the information on the application (and not one that's five miles long) and resume (which no employer seems to read) checks out - hire the person!

It is the ONLY way the employer and employee will know if the position is a good fit.

Employers make you jump through hoops Empty Re: Employers make you jump through hoops

Post by invisiblecitizen Wed Jun 13, 2012 9:39 am

You made me remember my interview from hell. In 2010 I went on a job interview and the office manager was telling me about the changes they were making to the employee workloads, pay structure and working environment. I was alarmed because having worked at similar firms in the past, I knew the changes would put heavy morale-busting pressure on the employees, inevitably leading to a toxic environment. But I needed that job. Then she began to brag about how much money the company had and their plans to use some of it to build a second huge and beautiful office building on another piece of prime real estate.

Then began the testing. I was tested for all the usual necessities including extensive and intricate Microsoft knowledge and my ability to get along with co-workers. After that, a slew of tests that I had never seen before and could not imagine their purpose. After three hours of tests, I was given a one hour lunch break and then came back for two more hours of tests. Very exhausting. At the end of the tests, the office manager informed me that my hours would be 4:00 pm to 11:30 pm (later if the workload required), my starting salary would be $9.15 an hour (no overtime pay since any overtime would be considered due to my lack of planning), and I would need to undergo a background check because I would be spending a great deal of time in the building alone. So far, terrible, but I needed that job. Then she good-naturedly dealt the lowest blow: in-building parking was not available to lower-level staff. I told her that I regretted she had not revealed that personal safety risk aspect of the job earlier, thanked her and left.

(I wasn’t too keen on being in that huge building alone every night... I needed the job..., but I definitely wasn’t going to be hailing down a cab on the streets of DC at night or hoping there was a safe underground garage that stayed open all night not too far away.)

I should have known. My appointment was for 9:00 am and I sat in the reception area until 10:15, completely ignored by the receptionist who spent the entire time on a very loud and not very friendly personal call with a personal friend. I kept wondering if that was my first “test.”

I don't think she had too much else to do, and she certainly needed to look busy in case they were eyeing her for layoff. I think that is why the interview took all day.

Oh, Jobless, I almost forgot - while I was in a room a little larger than a phone booth answering the questions on a computer, she was sitting right outside looking at my answers on another computer.

I may be off topic, but my profile and resume are on LinkedIn (so is my pix). Anyway, for the past several days I've been receiving announcements for administrative job opening in my area. There is a link next to the announcment that you click that indicates how many applicants have applied. Today for one job there were 107 applicants. Another job just listed this morning had 37 applicants.

Carlch, yes pretty disheartening. But on the flip side probably most of those applicants aren't qualified for the position.

That's why a lot of jobs are not even posted now. Recruiters are given a job requisition and search the job sites for a few qualified candidates.

Just update your profile every night on every job site you use. And here's my little trick - put "available" in your active resume title, like "Java Programmer - Available Immediately".

It's very hard to determine if a person is available when searching. But if the recruiter sees that you updated your resume or profile within the last 24 hours AND sees "available" - you have a MUCH better chance of being contacted.

Good luck!

Thanks alone. I'll update my profile in LinkedIn with "available." My settings note "looking for job opportunities." In my case, the block lies in age despite my appearance. I find networking to be valuable as well since I landed a 12-month temp role in 2011 at a former company.

Yes, some of the sites have a status field, but please put it right in your resume title. You're absolutely right. There's nothing like staying in touch and networking. And not email. These days a voice call and talking to a friend or colleague is so refreshing!

And real! Smile

I mean don't some of the droids see through the game?

If I owned a company or was ever an employer, I'd throw those questions in the trash.

Why should people pretend anymore?

After sitting through many a hiring practices seminar and legal practices seminars on hiring, you would be amazed why they ask they questions they ask and why they word them specifically.

Basically, they want to make sure they are speaking to a person who is willing to learn, grow with the position and possibly move up. I agree it could be asked differently, to me, in a more real way, but the number one reason it's not, lawsuits. People are offended and think you are trying to butt into their private lives. They have studied it, researched it and that's what they came up wtih.

I myself would rather "talk" and ask them what their goals are, what do they ultimately want to do, what is their area of interest, but...lawsuits. Sad world.

I couldn't agree more springflowers. Most of the answers to questions are pulled off the top of someone's head, rehearsed and full of the buzzwords that the corporate world loves to hear. It matters little if it's the truth, just spoken properly. snoooozzzzz.

I am going to play optimist here. As soon as the economy gets better, don't you think that companies that operate like this will hemorrhage their best employees. And I don't know about anyone else but if a company had disrespected me as a job applicant, they have lost me as a customer and my word of mouth with it.

Sometimes I think American innovation is going to die because yeah these are the people running the show, the so called conformist "business class" that never had an independent thought in a milion years. I always wonder why there is no employer that bucks this trend.

There are some that do, however, with everyone either outsourcing their HR depts. or living and dying by their in-house HR depts, they are the ones running the show. Granted, larger corps do it to hide behind so as to avoid lawsuits. However, having worked for two majors, Westinghouse (back in the day) and Graybar, we always insisted that dept. heads get to interview as well as HR to determine a good fit.

Agreed. They don't really care about those answers anyway.

I've been through some hoops... My problem lately is that I'm now running into school systems that require you to fill out DCF forms BEFORE they even select you for an interview! I'm sorry, what?! Those forms ask you about your living situation and past private history and stuff. This is not suitable for a job application!

Starbucksaholic: Yes, indeed they make you jump thru hoops. Some of the questions are so insulting that they make you want to get up and walk out of the interview. My favorite is: 'We're paying $8.50 an hour, is that all-right with you?' I will not write what I feel like saying or doing to the interviewer who asks this question. But you get the picture.
Q) What is your greatest strength? A) That I can persevere despite having to interview for a person who should be washing dishes.
Q) What is your greatest weakness? A) Ice cream.
Q) Tell me about yourself? A) I need a job.
Q) Why do you want to work here? A) What about 'I NEED A JOB' don't you understand?

Once, after passing a phone interview, I had a face to face interview where the guy used EVERY answer I had given during the phone interview to form a question. I had no idea what to say to him, but the look on my face must have said it anyway, because I did not get the job.
How about the personality 'testing'? Those are so detailed, time consuming, and insulting that sometimes I simply close the browser in the middle of the 'test'.
My fantasy is that one day I will supervise all the interviewers and hiring managers I have had the displeasure to meet during this economic depression. Talk about making their lives a living hell, let me tell you that is putting it mildly.

oh...I am so with you.... Ii don't know how old you are...but in my dyas when I began working, we had one interview and that's it. Now you go thru 2 or 3, when they could've handled it in one. The personality tests???? Hilarious.... How many have I filled out of those, just so I can do it again after 6 months because they don't keep them on file any longer than that...and you still don't get the darn job. I laugh everytime they ask a question on an interview..."why do you want to work here?" My response? Because of all the places I'd like to be employed is here...I love this company!!! "....Come on...if these young interviewers haven't figured out that we are lying by now, they are pretty clueless, and shouldn't even be the interviewer.

I agree with your fantasy....I hope some day, I can do that as well, or at least send a questionaire out to those stores that ask those darn stupid questions....

The one I like the most is. "Tell me where you'd like to be in five years?"
I know they want you to say that you'd work there forever and never even think of going somewhere else. It's not like my last company rewarded loyalty. I worked there for 17 years and got laid off at 53.

Lol! These replies are hilarious, and I agree with so many of them. I am so bad at interviews bc I feel like I can't be honest.... Like I just want a job so I can pay my rent and not rely on my bf for money. I feel like its another dialect you have to learn... And I don't have the handbook! I always end up saying something too honest in interviews and immediately after, think "oh crap!". My pet peeve about interviewing is that you can't ask about salary.... I mean, that's the most important part for me and is a dealbreaker, why are we both pretending it doesn't matter? Why do I have to wait for someone to bring it up?

Honestly, it's all what you bring to the table. It's all about your skills. Hard and soft skills.

You need to focus on your hard and fast fixed skills that the job requires. Intertwined within the interview are your soft skills being displayed, in being professional yet polite and a touch personal perhaps at time (being real).

Be the interviewer and look at yourself from that person's point of view.

Try not to get too personal and by no means discuss "how it's been lately". Approach every interview with interest in the position but no signs of dissolution from "normal" life.

In terms of salary, ask them the range they are comfortable paying this position. Are you in the position to compromise?

Office politics along with covert discrimination on the basis of age, sex, race and religion; nepotism, favoritism, and legislation (especially in right-to-work states) will trump anything you may bring to the table. If it were all about skills and what someone brings to the table, then we wouldn't have paranoid, incompetent, micromanagers (PIMMs) in top positions of power in government and industry. If by "soft skills," you mean the ability to deal with micromanagers http://www.softpanorama.org/Social/Toxic_managers/Micromanagers/understanding_micromanagers.shtml
and corporate psychopaths http://www.softpanorama.org/Social/Toxic_managers/index.shtml then perhaps it's true -- it will help you KEEP a job, but not necessarily FIND one.

Whenever I have been put through the "Employer Hoops" I leave knowing I will not be hired for any job with that employer and there was more then likely no job to be had anyway. That experience has happened to me 3 or 4 times in the past!!!!!

My favorite things these Fing employers do is waste your time by phone interviewing, then scheduling a fact to face interview only to find out that you need to return again and again for 2nd and 3rd interviews. If you can't make a decision from the 1st interview then PLEASE leave your job as a hiring manager and do something else.
