"Lazy" unemployed? Empty "Lazy" unemployed?

Post by WPA Today Sun Oct 07, 2012 8:23 pm

Hi Everyone,

I made a youtube presentation to honor the work of the unemployed, during the Great Depression, while they were in the WPA. Check it out if you get some free time (link below).

In many ways, the unemployed helped build and modernize America with their work in the WPA, NYA, CWA, and CCC. So, it's ironic (and pathetic) when the unemployed are cast as lazy by our all-too-familiar squadron of Republican and Tea Party politicians & pundits.

The presentation is specific to Maryland but, as you're watching it, think about your own state and what types of projects occurred there (the WPA's work in Maryland was mild compared to a lot of other areas).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK5elU8uYuQ

Keep your chin up in these ridiculous times.

Thanks, WPA Today.

I have a new word, "idle'. I was called that this morning from someone, a relative, who's home I vacuumed yesterday, on Columbus Day. In no way am I invested in this home. Feeling like Cinderella.

Need-a-break: Yes, it's hard to feel invested in something when you're not getting paid a lot and/or it's not something you feel is socially meaningful. I think one or both of those things need to be present before you jump out of bed in the morning with a smile on your face.

My Parish church was built during the depression. All the local people out of work got involved, and gave them money in their pocket. You should see the church they constructed...and If I knew how to insert a picture I would..lolol

MarilynL: Thanks for that. I think there was a little more hope and little more cooperation back in those days. I think greed and selfishness rules supreme today. Maybe the Internet has made us isolationists?

Here is the story when our church was built during the depression...a before and after photos as well. You may have to print the story to get the whole picture....Hope this gives you an insight of what they could do back then when people were broke during the depression.

This is what it looks like now

I totally agree with the internet causing us to be isolated from anyone personnally. I think the electronic age will be the death of us all...we are no longer hanging out and talking to our own neighbors. I am to blame for it as well...and it disgusts me that I can't do anything without the darn internet. I believe this will cause the end of the world or civilization.
