i don't want to have to say this, but i don't like my job.
I don't like saying it but I just don't like my job, I don't know where to begin, a lot of customers are so stupid that it insults my intelligence, I also feel like since they see me as a minnimum wage drone, it gives them an excuse to talk down to me.
The work itself I don't mind, its reppetive but its work. I just wish I could get away from the rude as hell people.
I feel bad complaining about my Job at a time where people are desperate for any job, and I know that I have got aways to go before a career, but I don't know which is worst. Bring unemployed or hating your job.

Re: i don't want to have to say this, but i don't like my job.
just think of it as a daily thing, not the rest of your life.
also maybe some of the people you run into simply lack the social skills to
ask good questions and such. they just "appear" stupid as a result.
use this job to sharpen your social skills, above all else dont lose your temper.
I am working a contract, where i am occasionally asked the boneheaded-est questions from time to time....
i continually bite my tongue and ask myself "how would a professional respond"....
what gets me most is how UPSET these people are over the most trivial matters....
just the other day while deploying a new PC with windows 7 on it, i was about bombarded with..."this is different", where did this go etc, etc, from the same individual...
others can be so easygoing, and some just make me wonder how long it took them to grasp there current job??

I know exactly how you feel - I was in retail too, until the host store has gone out of business. I felt I was degraded at times by some of people like you mentioned. I kept saying the same thing "it's still a job" etc. I'm not sure if I felt any better while I was working there at all. Some of my coworkers felt not so positive about me (I had to learn later) because of my education. Granted, I never acted condescending to any of them. Only positive aspect from that job was I had "some structure" and a place to report to.

In retail especially, you need to develop a thick skin when dealing with the public. Also, take the "stupid and cheerful" aproach. Most of the people giving you a hard time are the ones with issues. Don't take it personal. If they carry on and get downright abusive, get your manager involved. That's part of their job. If they carry on after that, then it's time to get security involved where they will probably have to be escorted from the store!

Say it loud, say it proud. I don't think I could ever return to retail. At least in that capacity. I manage a lot of public relations for a large volunteer organization and I often cry myself to sleep over it. Or lose sleep altogether. One thing I have learned, though, is that retail prepares you for a lot of BS in the workplace. Sad, but true. Just do your best every day and leave all your problems at work. Go home and live life every day. And do your best to move on from there as fast as you can.
