research say dumb people too dumb to know it
A growing body of psychology research shows that incompetence deprives people of the ability to recognize their own incompetence. To put it bluntly, dumb people are too dumb to know it. Similarly, unfunny people don't have a good enough sense of humor to tell.

i always say people are simply "not informed" and never resort to name calling... but this research could explain a whole lot

I agree elvis. I don't think the name calling or categorizing is necessary, however it's very true that people limit their own knowledge. I don't think it's a question of intelligence, but upbringing, thirst for knowledge, lack of resources or simply sometimes not wanting the facts.
