universal basic income Empty universal basic income

Post by beretta1071@gmail.com Sun Jan 06, 2013 11:03 pm

I have come to the conclusion that I believe it is time for every person over 18 to get a universal basic income of say $15,000 or maybe $20,000 a year (suggested amount).

This is to be paid to everyone whether they are working, not working, stay at home mom, student, disabled. Every person gets this no matter unless they are in jail or dead. This would take care of unemployment insurance, social security issue.

This would be a basic amount, each person can decide if they want to work to earn more, go to school, whatever. This would be an income that a person can fall back on when unemployed. I know that this is controversial, and many people are going to cry foul, that this would promote laziness. Well I say so what, everybody gets it, whether you are rich or poor, so nobody gets any special treatment.

I want to re-iterate, that this basic income would be just enough so that it provides for basics. Person can decide to work and add to it, or go to school for a while or invest it, save it, whatever they want.

I believe that it is time something like this gets implemented. I know thouh that it would be fought tooth and nail unfortunately. If this ever gets implemented, it will not be in my lifetime, i doubt i will be alive to see it.

Yet i see this a such a simple solution to the unemployment problem, social security problem, disability problem. Just give it to everybody, no matter what your financial situation is.

I appreciate your opinion. And while it wouldn't work, I can't justify not doing it because I have yet to make that amount. I can't believe I just admitted that out loud... Life isn't supposed to be this way for someone with a college degree. Sad

i am pretty sure, the US NOW has such a "saftey net"....to some extent...

If someone id disabled or over the age of either 62 (or 65) they are entitled to social security benefits...If for whatever reason they have not acumulated enough credits (what haveyou) they are STILL entitled to get a combination of SSI and SSD benefits of nearly a combined total of about 700$/month

IF those benefits were extended to all, (allong with associated suplimental housing, food stamps) it would approximate what you mention

beretta,

Have you done a quick estimate of what this would actually cost?

Turns out that it would run about $4.4 trillion to pay everyone 18 and older $20,000 per year. Federal tax income was $2.3 trillion in 2011.

I agree this would cost a lot. The way I look at it, the government is going to have no choice but to implement this in the future. What is going to be done about the millions of unemployed otherwise? Somebody has to take care of them. If companies will not hire them? then what is to be done?

What other alternative is there? Jobs are going to become more scarce with outsourcing and automation, what are the masses of people to do?

I guess that is the big question, their will never be enough jobs for everybody and more so in the future?

I'am open to other suggestions.

The Government. HA They have done nothing for the millions of the first exhaustees, who have been without income since March of 2010. We are not even mentioned anymore. The LUCKY ones, so to speak, have been able to move in with family, have family helping them, or have found someone to rent them a room or a basement, , in exchange for some type of trade. landscaping, laundry, housekeeping ect. And are trying to survive eating, on their monthly Food Stamp allotment. The not so LUCKY ones... Sad

Good Luck to you, but don t hold your breathe on this one.

Nutty, I'm starting to wonder if we are the "lucky" ones because we have family and friends who stand by us. I am so tired of being dependent, it just isn't worth it. Sorry, just having a very down day. Sad

The reason that nobody has been done about the 99ers is because their hasn't really been any unrest or rioting yet. If this were Europe you bet their would have been unrest and rioting over this. We Americans are very passive unfortunetly.

but once the numbers get high enough then we probably will see unrest and rioting, that will be the only thing that will get the goverment's attention, otherwise things will not change. I sometimes think it will take blood on the streets for things to change unfortunately, that is how it has always been thru history.

Hi

First, I want to say that even though I disagree with the free money aspect, I applaud that you care about the country enough to put some thought into how to fix things. I have seen too many people just not vote, then complain when they don't get their way. I hope that if you feel strongly about a living wage that you find a candidate that supports your beliefs and support them by voting for them.

Now for this part - you said "What other alternative is there? Jobs are going to become more scarce with outsourcing and automation, what are the masses of people to do?"

I am an outsourcing victim so I know something about this first hand.

--It is very attractive to corporate America to outsource. There are tax advantages, wage advantages, basically strategic advantages in hiring people outside of the USA. This makes it hard for corporations to think altruistically as they need to focus on the bottom line / stock price.

--Our corporate tax structure rewards businesses who keep money offshore. Many large companies do not repatriate earnings from other geographic locations because our corporate tax is too high. They do not have an incentive to bring the money back to the USA, why should they? They will lose money.

--We already have a living wage. If you are poor enough, you can get things for *free* in this country (healthcare, food subsidies, etc) and YES it is hard to depend on various programs, but you should travel to other countries to see how good we have it here. Largely we Americans have it pretty easy when it comes to poverty, compared with 2/3 of the world.

Right now the sad thing is that the middle class is really getting killed. If you are well off you are good to go, or if you are dirt poor you qualify for social programs.

Keep thinking how to fix things, but think about *who will pay for the solution you suggest. The more money we print the more our currency is devalued. In a few years a gallon of milk could be $10.

I wish everyone would take a point of view, and please know that I am slamming your opinion at all.
