Bye bye unemployment benefits - Eight States to Stop Federal Benefits Program May 12 Empty Thousands of Californians to lose benefits

Post by Guest Wed Apr 25, 2012 9:06 pm

Some 93,000 unemployed California residents will lose their jobless benefits in mid May because the state's economy is improving.

The state announced this afternoon that Californians who are currently collecting unemployment benefits under the FED-ED extension will be affected.

The state does not break down the number of people on the federal extension program by county.

In addition to the estimated 93,000 residents, California Employment Development Department officials say more than 100,000 who might have qualified for FED-ED benefits between now and year's end will also lose the additional assistance.

California's unemployment is at 11% and not looking better--the third worst in the country. Does this make sense that they then should cut the benefits? No...

Marian, from your member profile it looks like you reside in my area of CA. Yes, this state is in dire straits --- people that were affected by the downturn in 2008 are either (1) still unemployed (99er then some) or (2) "underemployed" as I was for most of 2011. Fortunately, I earned enough wages in 2011 working parttime to open a new UE claim in December 2011.

It's crazy to cut those last 20 weeks. Many supermarkets and department stores have all downsized because no one has money to spend. There are closed store fronts everywhere -- even in upscale areas. I'm on the last few weeks of my original 26 week claim. Sadly, at my age (64) most companies are not even interested in interviewing me despite my skill set. A person's age is readily available now. Since 2008 - too much change in too short a time has wrecked havoc on the lives of many people here.

I probably will not be able to get all 4 tiers since they will expire in December 2012. Not a good sign. California is in a false recovery hanging on with Facebook, Salesforce, Apple, Google. etc. (Keep a close watch on Apple now that their visionary is no longer with us.)

I'm very scared that I could lose my home at this rate... It's terrible that the government would cut our benefits with unemployment still this high...

Hang in there and I hope you find work. If unemployment continues to rise the government may need to reinstate some weeks or something. Surely eliminating weeks is purely political.

It's very political--Obama wants to pretend that we are in a recovery while the Republicans want to blame him for over spending and when there are riots because so many people are now desperate they will also blame him... No one cares in the end about the people...

Anyone who believes the Republicans or Democrats will save us are very deluded.

REMINDER - THIS TAKES EFFECT SATURDAY!!

Chronically Unemployed Cut Off Saturday
Federal standards prevent Californians from receiving long-term unemployment benefits past May 12

About 93,000 people will be immediately affected, according to California’s Employment Development Department (EDD).

“The week ending May 12, 2012, will be the last week EDD can pay FED-ED benefits to eligible unemployed workers, even if someone has a remaining balance on their FED-ED extension,” according to an EDD news release.

Thanks for the information! Last year at this time NC lost benefits also. I will post this info in the North Carolina thread to keep everyone informed. Hopefully the half a million people who will be losing benefits will speak out and make a difference again this year!!

Bye bye unemployment benefits - Eight States to Stop Federal Benefits Program May 12 Empty North Carolina State EB to END, SAT., MAY 12!!

Post by Guest Thu May 10, 2012 8:33 am

The EB program is subject to labor market conditions in our state, which determines our eligibility. This program is not in effect for weeks after May 12, 2012.

During the next two weeks, 17,000 people in North Carolina will lose their long-term benefits.

The state, like South Carolina has exhausted its benefits and the federal extension.

According to Jason Chappell who oversees the Henderson County Joblink Career Center in the declining unemployment rate triggered the end of those benefits.

“I think the process is becoming a little bit quicker,” says Chappell. “I can tell you North Carolina, there are tremendous opportunities in manufacturing."

Sometime ago, economists mentioned that the US would follow other countries (Japan) in taking austerity measures through the end of this decade. I think Paul Krugman mentions this as well. This is only the beginning --- it will worsen in my opinion. Here in CA the job market is still competitive.

More than 200,000 long-term jobless Americans will lose their unemployment checks this week, when eight states roll off the federal extended benefits program.

The federal extended benefits program has provided the jobless with up to 20 weeks of unemployment checks after they've run through their state and their federal emergency benefits, which together last up to 79 weeks.

The states:

California
Florida
Illinois
North Carolina
Colorado
Connecticut
Pennsylvania
Texas

Proponents of benefit cuts will sometimes argue that these workers will now be exceptionally motivated to go get hired now that they’ve been cut off. But how realistic is that? As economist Mark Thoma argues here, there are still 3.4 job seekers for every opening in the job market. That’s abnormally high. In fact, it’s still higher than at any point in the 2002 recession. And it means that many people answering job ads and sending in resumés are going to come up empty-handed, no matter how motivated they are.

I just read this article on MoneyCNN -- and my blood is boiling. I think the 200,000 figure is way off meaning there are more people than 200K. I agree with a couple of the comments at the end of the article. (I urge everyone to read them).
