Traveling
Hello All. I was recently laid off and am filing for unemployment. My question is I have a vacation coming up that is already paid for for one week. I obviously wouldnt be available for work this week so is there a way to suspend benefits and resume them after this week. I would try to cancel it but its non-refundable. I also have some savings I could live off of and wait to apply for unemployment after returning, although I would prefer to keep that savings intact. I live in Utah btw. A lot of people are of the mind set "just go and dont tell them." Im not that kind of guy

Re: Traveling
When you file for unemployment, 1 week is waiting period and you don't get paid. So file, go for 1 week, come back. Save what is in your savings, even if you find job next, you don't know when you will need that money. Have a safe trip.

The employer should of gave you all vacation pay at the time of being unemployed. Your state should have taken that by extending your waiting week.
If you recently received vacation pay that must be reported to Unemployment Office as income. You just will not collect for that week and may have to restart your claim. It is too easily caught if it is paid by a paycheck. It is Fraud and could lose your UI over this. There is penalities for this, even jail and heavy fines.
As far as vacation time, nobody will not give you a hard time not enjoying yourself. Just don't refuse an interview unless it isn't in your skills or education. Never tell Unemployment your on vacation or even sick for 1 hour. You must be availabel 24/7 to work to collect.
