question about fed extension and defaulted loans Empty question about fed extension and defaulted loans

Hello. I'm new here. Came across this forum on google. Looks like there's a lot of good info here and will look through this forum extensively.

A quick question in the meantime.

Does anybody know if federal extended unemployment benefits are affected by defaulted federal student loans? I'm almost done with my initial state benefits and after doing my taxes this year I didn't receive my federal tax refund because of a student loan I defaulted on the last time I was unemployed a few years ago. It wasn't a big deal I guess because it was a small amount ($75) and its not like it was money I already had and lost or anything but if my federal unemployment extension is denied I will definitely be hurting.

Does anybody know if a claim is rejected or if a part or all of what would be my weekly benefit amount is taken away?

The only info I've come across says things like social security and disability benefits might be affected but I haven't come across anything that mentions unemployment benefits. Appreciate any info on this. Thanks.

I believe the only thing that can be levied against unemployment benefits is child support.

You should check to see if your lender has a deferment for unemployment. While the government still acknowledged there was a recession, there was a program in place. Now that our economy is "booming" again (Haha), a lot of those benefits have expired.

You can consolidate your defaulted loan. I did mine at 2010. I got a call from my junior collage financial aid that they want to help me consolidate my defaulted loan and I thought it was scam because I was told that it can't be done but they said when government did stimulus package it was included. I believe you still can do it, but you might have to call or apply online at www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov/ .

You have to know who currently has your loan and the amount and the id number. When you speak to the representative, the application will come in about 5-7 days. Put all the necessary information and it will take about 2 month to finish. Then you can put it for deferment but since you only have 1 repayment option(ncome-based repayment) and if you don't have income the payment is $0, so don't need to worry about deferment. Call and find out if you can consolidate all your loans include defaulted one.
