Got hired for a few hours/week but I need a car. Help! Empty Got hired for a few hours/week but I need a car. Help!

I have been unemployed for 6months...ok, technically I don't qualify for unemployment because I have only ever worked part-time (not by choice, only because I couldn't find full-time). I finally got hired for 4 hours a day, 3 days a week. After taxes I should be making around $100/week. I took the job because their is a bus near my apartment, but I just realized that I am going to have to move in with family at the end of this month. My landlord would not renew my lease because I am unemployed. My closest family member has no public transit, and I will still need to pay them some rent. I need a car to get to the job, but clearly the job doesn't pay enough for me to get approved for an auto loan or pay for insurance, gas or maintenance.

HELP! Is there anything I can do to get a car? I have no savings, but I really need this job to start growing my resume. I graduated from college in 2010, but all employers look past my education and only look at my employment gap. I know if I can stick with this job it will increase my chances of getting another job. I'm so desperate, and have no money...this job gave me some hope again. Has anyone else been in this situation, and what did you do?

Go to the Dealership every morning ask if you can test drive the car, you will get to work then. But serious, ask your friends or family.. if they cant do it, you might be out of luck. No one is going to give you loan on $100 a week unless you want a really old used car, which might be more of a problem then its worth.. I assume you will be living at home with your family, so it never hurts.. try the above VW has some good deals. Very Happy

Lost, don't think I've gone off the deep end. Contact your local Goodwill, Church or social services office. They have all kinds of ways to get people to work when they are in need. Also, churches have members that volunteer for this type of thing in exchange for a few hours of volunteering for something they may need which wouldn't interfere with your job.

Another, try your local representative or state senate office. They may have an avenue for you. I drive three ppl to work once a week to help out, through the Church around the corner. I am not a parishoner there but offered for gas mileage. I don't have any job, so if I can help someone, I do. The church pays the mileage. No hourly rate, but if I can help I do.

See what happens. Good luck and let us know how you make out. Once you start working, you may find that some others at work live near enough that you can perhaps pay them some gas money and ride along.

Also try your local welfare office...I know it sounds silly, but if you have been unemployed and meet certain criteria here in mass, welfare will pay for a ride for you to get to and from work. we also have something here in Mass called dial-a-ride. Its through the local public bus co called Gatra. the fee is not bad and you call them and tell them what time to pick you up and where you want to go, kind of like a taxi but much cheaper, and they will tell you how much. They will send a van or little bus to come get you. Not sure if Gatra is national or just local. Maybe there is something similar in your area. I hope this helped a little. Also, do you have a commuter rail near by?

I actually may be moving in with my in-laws. I can't ask them for money, especially since their kids are in the same situation I'm in. I've asked my family for help with funding a car in the past. They are willing to lend me money so long as I can make monthly payments, which I can't right now. So if I ever get a full-time job they would be able to give me an interest free loan, but until then they worry whether they will get the money back.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will try these options and try to find some local programs. Unfortunately my search didn't find any transportation programs in the area but I will check with local churches and the welfare office. There is no commuter rail where I will probably have to move, but there is a commuter rail from the city near me. What I've found is that there is a bus that goes into the city, then from the city I can take the train back into the 'burbs. It's about 1 mile away from the job, but I'm pretty sure there are pedestrian paths. It will take 3-4 hours ugh! Not sure on cost. It only takes 20 minutes by car. I mean, it's better than nothing but, my god, 6-8 hours commuting for 4 hours of pay. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
