Re: My hvac system is on the blink!!
It is very frustrating to work with these agencies when they are fighting for the funding to help people in our situations and also getting nowhere.
One positive thing about LIHEAP, in your case MD Energy Assistance, is that funds in most states for the upcoming winter will be available on November 1. Keep on them to stay at the top of the list!!

I spoke with Smeco and they said my application has been filed and they are waiting for approval. I'll be on the phone with MEAP tomorrow. From what I understand once that's approved Smeco will help with getting my heat pump repaired.

Re: My hvac system is on the blink!!
rhiannonj sorry to hear about your furnace. A couple of thoughts come to mind, but first *anyone" filing for help with heating bills through LIHEAP, get the forms and get in and stand in line before they open tomorrow! The funds will go fast! Take ID, proof of income, utility bill, etc. Last year I stood in line outside for several hours since I didn't know to get there extra early.
There is a program here my county has for homeowners that will replace/repair furnaces but it's run through my county only once a year.
Call 211 and follow any leads they may give you. If the agency names they give you doesn't provide that help, ask them for a referral to one that can and keep digging away.
Get in touch with your local weatherization program. Try calling your local Urban League for contact info. My furnace was only 6 years old, but they inspected it and gave me a new filter in addition to weatherization.
I hope the mods don't mind but the LIHEAP info is so important, I will amend this for a separate topic.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Final 2011 appropriations have reduced LIHEAP funding by 20 percent to $4,500,652,656. Proposed cuts for 2012 will eliminate an additional 30 percent of the current funding for LIHEAP; which could affect more than 3 million households – or almost 9 million people.

Good news! I just spoke with MEAP and I've been certified!! I get two separate grants, one for electric and the other for heat.

That is great news! Maybe you can post the contact info in your state's thread for others in Maryland. http://www.unemployed-friends2.org/f38-maryland
