Reid goes Nuclear

Post by gettheminNOVEMBER on Fri Oct 07, 2011 6:00 pm

http://mobile.thehill.com/homenews/senate/186133-reid-triggers-nuclear-option-to-change-senate-rules-and-prohibit-post-cloture-filibusters

In a shocking development Thursday evening, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) triggered a rarely used procedural option informally called the “nuclear option” to change the Senate rules.

Reid and 50 members of his caucus voted to change Senate rules unilaterally to prevent Republicans from forcing votes on uncomfortable amendments after the chamber has voted to move to final passage of a bill.

Reid’s coup passed by a vote of 51-48, leaving Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) fuming.

IN YOUR FACE MITCH MCTURTLE. Talk to the hand

Unfortunately, Mitch McTurtle can turn around and do the same thing to Reid now that the precedent has been set.

But the Dems have the majority in this case.

DIR is right, it's a two-edged sword, but at least if they had done this two years ago, we could have rammed through some good stuff. Now that we don't have the majority in the House, is it worth it?

No, McConnell does not have this option. You have to have a majority in the senate and, I think, it can only be used in certain situations and certain times. I want to say once a legislative session but I'm not sure.

This brings back bad memories from two years ago when every single day someone on UFF 1 would chime in with "Have you guys heard about something called the nuclear option?" which would create days of arguments about whether this could be done or not. "why don't they just use it to give us benefits forever?"

That sort of thing.

Luckily those days are over. (famous last words)

They wanted a plan from the President, they have one, they don't want to vote on it or they will vote on it after the add amendments and vulcharize it to suit their needs, all in the name of "smaller government". Read some of the amendments they wanted to add. Smaller????? I don't think so.

And, 1208 is right, if they passed it clean, it would never pass Congress. Why is it no one is screaming that these people are standing in the way of our lives, jobs, benefits etc. Can't take the quiet, it's just as bad as the lack of compassion and the lack of money for benefits.

White House Petition for the 99ers has only 1563 signatures? Sometimes I wonder, are we here the only people who really care about this. It's been tweeted, facebooked and emailed, where are all the 99ers?

I think the President is wondering the same thing. He mentioned in his press conference regarding this bill on Friday, that back in July, Americans crashed the Capitol's server and jammed their phone lines over the debt debacle. He is now calling for the same help with this piece of legislation, but it isn't happening!

Where is everybody???

He has the veto power, but they have to vote on something for him to veto and it just wastes more and more precious time.

I don't think he will get to use his veto power on any of the bills that come out of the 112th Congress - I believe there are only 26 working days left until they adjourn!

Republicans vow retaliation after Reid uses nuclear option in Senate

Senate Republicans vow they will retaliate for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) decision to unilaterally change the Senate’s rules Thursday without prior warning or negotiation.

Republican aides say their bosses will now be even more reluctant to allow the Senate to conduct routine business by unanimous consent, forcing Reid to gather 60 votes for even the most mundane matters.
