Unemployment rates rose in July in more than half the states for the second straight month, evidence that job growth remains weak nationwide.

The Labor Department said Friday that unemployment increased in 28 states, fell in nine and remained unchanged in 13. Those are nearly the same figures as in June, when unemployment rose in 28 states, fell in eight and was unchanged in 14.

Just think the 99ers are not even included in these stats. affraid

By the way Ed Schultz mentioned the 99ers last night. He said he has not forgotten them.

Here is something also that proves the Unemployment rates are not accurate. I was reading about one of the factors they use to calculate the rate:

"The unemployment rate is determined by a telephone survey of households in the state."

Duh, they never called me! Many people have unlisted numbers or are on DO NOT CALL lists. So these numbers, plus 99ers not being included shows how these numbers are wayyyyy off.

Interesting article and great comments. I personally think with our economy in the state that it is in, exchange student programs are not necessary. Corporate America gets greedier! Hershey has been in the news for layoffs, plant closings, and outsourcing!

I worked for Hershey in the Peter Paul plant in Naugatuck Ct., made Almond Joys and Mounds. In April, 2007 we were told that over a period of three years, 6 manufacturing plants were going to be closed - 3 in Canada and 1 each in California, Connecticut and Pennsylvannia. My plant is the one from Connecticut (and I want to add that this plant started in Connecticut and was going strong for over 75 years in Naugatuck - good product, and great profits - until it was purchased by this candy manufacturer.) The closings were being done to cut costs and to compete in faster growing and cheaper regions. Aproximately 3,000 employees were affected and let go to join the unemployed ranks(probably more by now). This corporation expanded its operations in Mexico, India, China and Brazil. So much for the "Great American Chocolate Bar"! To add insult to injury, the person who was Chairman, President and Chief Executive of this corporation, retired at the end of 2007 at age 55. His retirement benefits under the Supplemental Executive Retirement plan was 11.2 million dollars, plus whatever additional perks he was entitled to. By the way, he joined the firm in 2001 and retired in 2007. Pretty good for 6 years of work.

I worked there for 26 years and it was a great place to work with good wages (the lowest paying job paid $16.00 and hr. and that was just for opening scrap candy bars to salvage the good bars. Everyone was like family. At least I was fortunate enough to raise my kids before it closed. Only a handful of the 300+ have found employment since being let go. After 3 1/2 years of trying to find work I have finally landed a temp job with the yogurt factory here in town. The money is nowhere near the money I made at Peter Paul, but it's a job and I can pay my bills and eat. it's sad, but earlier this year Hershey tore the entire building down and is now trying to sell the property to build stores.

I loved my job, I loved Peter Paul but I despise Hershey. They have destroyed the livelihood of many dedicated hard workers. Corporate greed at its best. I refuse to buy any Hershey products and encourage my friends and family to do the same. My God their milk chocolate isn't even real chocolate now - additives to replace the cocoa butter.

Thanks for that info mrmarti. Until you mentioned this, I was a big Hershey fan. Now, I will NOT buy any more Hershey products. I will also tell my friends and family members not to buy them as well. Also, we usually go to Hershey Park around this time of year. I will now be cancelling this trip. Another company that went over to the Dark Side! Are there no ethical companies left, or is this now an oxymoron? Have these companies all lost their collective minds?
