August 4 Weekly First Time Claims: 400,000 - Last week's adjusted to 401,000
The Labor Department says that applications for unemployment benefits edged down 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 400,000. That's the lowest level in four months. The previous week's figure was revised upward from 398,000 to 401,000.
The four-week average, a less volatile figure, dropped for the fifth straight week to 407,750. That suggests there is a downward trend in applications.
Applications have been at or above 400,000 for 17 weeks. They fell in February to 375,000, a level that signals healthy job growth. They stayed below 400,000 for two months, but applications then surged to an eight-month high of 478,000 in April and have declined slowly since then.

I don't believe those numbers for a second.

They will be adjusted before next week. Last week, everyone was celebrating because First Time Claims dropped below 400,000 for the first time since April to 398,000. Well, that is now revised and the new figure for last week is 401,000 so I guess they will have to put the champagne away for a while now.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending July 16 was 7,570,439, a decrease of 75,192 from the previous week.
Possibly 75k 99er.

I have no doubt these are 99ers. Again, they like to fudge the numbers. Not fooling me or anyone else on this forum.

I can't wait to see the "fudged" Employment Situation numbers tomorrow (the national ue rate for July). According to economists at Goldman Sachs, just two tenths of a point puts us officially into a "double-dip". They can't let that happen!TOO OLD TO HIRE IN PA wrote:Jobless_in_Ma wrote:The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending July 16 was 7,570,439, a decrease of 75,192 from the previous week.
