If inequality continues to increase relentlessly, it seems likely that major social disruptions are inevitable. We see this in Europe and the Middle East already. What people should keep in mind is that -- despite conservative rhetoric about the welfare state -- the U.S. has the weakest social safety net of any advanced country. Once you exhaust your unemployment benefits and your savings, you are in serious trouble if you can't either find a job or get someone to take you in.

The current recession has now been going on for so long that one has to begin to wonder how many families out there are getting close to the brink. At the same time, huge numbers of young people are unemployed and probably see little prospect of that changing anytime soon. That has been one of the primary drivers of unrest in the Middle East.

This would have already happened except for the fact that Americans still have someone else to blame. They can still blame democrats or republicans or the unemployed or someone. Once everyone realizes that government in general and the extremely wealthy are the real problem then you will see what you are now seeing everywhere else in the world.

The rich are going to be nervous with the stock market. They could become us by August2.

It can't be ruled out. If it does happen in America, it will be a big blow to the western economy to see this happen to it's flagship country.

While there are many young people out of work, THEY HAVE TIME ON THEIR SIDE! I have to be optimistic that things are going to get better for them. Those of us 55 and over are RUNNING OUT OF TIME. We have no prospects of getting another job and they want us all to DROP DEAD so they will use our money to keep Social Security and Medicare solvent for future generations. They need to reduce the retirement age for the long-term older unemployed so at least we can collect what we have worked so hard for over the years and try to keep our heads above water! JMO

LOL, I agree. When I read about teenagers and college kids not able to find jobs I don't worry at all. At least I have a leg up over someone.
Let's give jobs to people that actually need them.
