How was the jobs report that came out earlier this month? Not pretty. Hiring stalled for all age groups. Employers are understandably nervous about the debt ceiling debate and implications for the economy.
According to this AARP Bulletin article, older workers took a disproportionate hit. The unemployment rate for men 55+ leaped to 7.9 percent last month, and the rate for older women rose to 6.3 percent. Not surprisingly, age discrimination is a valid concern.

More and more people are finding that they need to work longer for a variety of reasons. They need health insurance benefits. Medications are expensive. The recession ravaged their nest egg. Or they lost their home and savings due to long-term unemployment or lower real estate values and a mortgage they could no longer pay. Now, a bit of good news…
AARP has resources designed for people 50 and over to help with your job search. Whether you’ve been laid off or you’re working now but want to explore a career change in a promising field – or if you want to think about becoming your own boss or working part-time. You don’t even have to be an AARP member to use them (although we’d love to have you join us!).

I live in a community/neighborhood predominate of older people and I think, since I am new to the US I can learn more from them. In japan we are always respectable to our elders.

Hi Sick&Tired,

Is there a link to this article, or just go to the AARP website?

I did not renew my membership to AARP this month. They have changed their stance on cuts to Social Security and are now backing them.

Frustrated

After last weeks unemployment numbers dropping 22,000, I hate to be a negative wuss, but tomorrow's or Fridays numbers will be very interesting!Everyone knows things are worse and hiring isn't even in the works but it will not surprise me to read unemployment take a dive again! They'll do anything to hide the truth. Also how many companies have announced this week alone their plans to cut or lay off thousands of jobs??? Hum!

I hear ya! Its awful. The only good thing about the horrible numbers is that the media goes wild with it and we are seeing more and more articles regarding the unemployed/long term unemployed. We need them to keep showing these stories. The more pressure there is in the press the more of a chance we have of getting some relief.

AARP has betrayed older Americans by supporting cuts in Social Security. There needs to be another organization that actually fights for the rights of older Americans. RIP AARP.

I am seriously suggesting the Humane Society. All this is for dogs, cats, horses and other animals. We are animals. They help start the labor laws and other laws of abuse for the children.

Anyone have a better idea? You dog has more rights than a homeless person!
