I have a 6 year vested pension with them. I am 62 now and need it. I have to wait to 65. This totally sucks! Talk about an injustice!

Re: Volunteer lay-offs at Lockheed, 6,500??

This couldn't come at a worse time. But here is what KILLS me about these stories and others like them.

For the last decade, any company associated with this program and other government programs with an expiration date have known this and basically ignored it. They have done nothing to prepare their employees nor did they seek to find them employment in another division or area. Yes, some probably can take early retirement. But once again, at the last minute, people are turned out on the streets.

Before you jump on me, I had spent the first 10 years of my working life with a division of a major mfg. who largely depended on gov't contracts, after 10 years of looking over my shoulder (with many others as well), I went to a distributor that did not depend mostly on these types of contracts. In 2008, when the rug was pulled from most of us, we were not depending on a contract, it was the entire country's economy. When you work for a Lockheed, Boeing to name just two, a large part of these companies are 3-7 year contracts with the government, at the end of these programs you may be faced with large layoffs. These programs also hire and fully disclose that their entire dependence is on contracts. With gov't spending being put under the microscope, programs like the space shuttle, with it's cost and problems, has made no secret of when it would end. It's bad timing I agree, but it's been no secret. Had they been smart (a novel concept) they would already have in place the replacement program for the shuttle and be working on it now.

I expect to hear of more of these types of companies laying off. With Nasa no longer being Nasa per say and loosing 7k jobs, no one mentioned the trickle down effect it would have to these types of companies.

Of course we will hear more of it. But again, no plan in place to update these programs or start new ones, far more advanced and a way to keep many employed. They have known the "end dates" for these programs for years, no plan!!!

Again, don't jump on me for this. It's not about the $$$ it's about the lack of planning. No plans in place for these ex-gov't contractors, they will if at the right age be able to take early SS. Now, hear me out, many don't want to retire early, it is less money, it also continues to tax an already taxed system. If they had properly planned, these people could transition to new jobs. They now have property that will sit unused, loss of tax revenue and it goes on and on. Not to mention the revenue hits the states where these plants are located and the hits they will continue to take. It's bad planning. On one hand, programs given federal funds to run will save that money, on the other, many thousands lose jobs, states lose revenues, and alot of them at that, and we have no plan in place for a new and improved program. Meanwhile, Lockheed, Boeing and the like have made their money and Wash DC doesn't see the problem with this, and they funded the majority of the program.

I collect early SS. I was able to collect a pension at 60 from GE. This was due to a plant closing years ago and I was in the Union. The Federal Law should be changed from 65 to when you you start SS benefits, you qualify. Especially if you exhausted all your Unemployment benefits. Talking about something that really sucks in this nation!
