What are the chances the U.S. economy could eventually trigger violence in our country? Empty What are the chances the U.S. economy could eventually trigger violence in our country?

Post by Guest Fri Jul 15, 2011 11:17 am

For the first time maybe since the Vietnam War or certainly since the civil rights movement, there are some darkening storm clouds on the civility horizon. A growing number of voices are continuing to suggest that if this economy doesn't turn around, and people can't start feeling optimistic about their futures again, we could be headed for some ugly scenarios. A new CNN poll says 48 percent of Americans think the country is headed for another Great Depression in the next twelve months. That is a stunning number.

James Carville, who in 1992 told Bill Clinton, "It's the economy stupid," says the current economy is so bad, there is a heightened risk of civil unrest. And unless things start changing for the better, it's a distinct possibility.

I think about this often. I am not sure Americans in general would resort to this, however, there are around 88 million guns out there (maybe even more now, as I read many posts on other forums that advocate getting more guns and more ammo). Of course, the govt has bigger and stronger ways to fight back than with guns. Throwing people in jail comes to mind. I would certainly hope the govt would not come back with violence.

Who knows what will happen? I wishl they would stop calling this the great Recession. I think it's a depression.

It's a very real possibility, and the career politicians know it too. If they don't start coming up with some solutions to relieve the financial burdens of the American people and soon, it will be too late.

I think President Obama did some riot control when he stood up to Cantor. Yesterday, Cantor kept his mouth shut. I think the Wall Street Bankers told him to shut up.

If the President understands then there is less chance for a riot. Time will tell.

After watching the police slash and trash homeless people's belongings, hearing of children being taken away and networking with other unemployed/99er/homeless- I am completely amazed by our gentleness and civility. Too bad it isn't reciprocated.

I think we were all hopeful that our country wasn't really turning its back on us. I think the pain of realizing it has, and the horror of realizing the cavalry isn't coming is finally sinking in, and yes, I do foresee violence.

I cant figure out why more people arent angry. Not that I want to see violence, but I can say I think if someone took my child because I am poor I would be screaming in the streets and protesting until my last breath.

Although I do think at this point these people feel defeated and feel there is nothing they can do because they dont have $$.

This country is headed into one pathetic, greedy, heartless land of no opportunity. We should be combating homelessness, not causing it.

Agree and wholeheartedly. People always think the poor can always get legal aid, and free. It isn't true. Legal aid is swamped, and frequently limit their case loads to certain things (domestic violence, or something). If you don't fall into all of their requisite categories, you can't get help. In some places, homeless can be arrested. How do they make bail? Now, a 99er has lost their belongings, their family and has a criminal record excluding them from employment in many places. As for the children who are taken, they have had to stand by and watch their home, their pets, their belongings taken away from them. Now, their loved ones are gone. Quite the system.

I hope that all of these problems can be resolved as they should be, with proper legislation, jobs program and additional benefits for the unemployed and the 99ers. Violence is not a option for me. I will protest, advocate, write, call and scream, but I will not let them make me something I am not.

I am a firm believer in what goes around comes around, it may not happen fast enough for some people, but it will come.

For instance, Casey Anthony - wouldn't want to be her
Paul Ryan - (did they put him in witness protection)
Eric Cantor - looking over his shoulder for the rest of his
life if Moody's downgrades us
Mortgage Bankers when the Attorneys General finish with them.

We have grown smarter and wiser about the politics of running a country, now we have to use it. We lobby, continue the fight, vote according to our conscience and not give in and vote people out because they don't move quickly enough. Last November is costing this country dearly. If these teavangelists get their way, we better hope we can pitch tents in the parking lots of all the malls and strip malls because we are all done, including the wealthy.

What I can't figure out is why we have so few people left who are really helping to advocate for benefits and jobs. Even at our busiest, we didn't have the kinds of numbers on any forum combined that truly represents our numbers. I know we have all been active, but it does not appear as sick and tired said that enough of the unemployed and 99ers as a whole are angry.

I think everyone will handle and process this situation differently. Some will believe in the govt enough to do as you say above (and many have) and then some will just give up. I think one can advocate for benefits and ask for jobs, but no one can be forced to hire someone. And there are only so many jobs to go around and I don't know where more jobs are supposed to come from as we've given our jobs away. IMO, what we really need to do is to stop fighting pointless wars and use that money to create something like the work project that FDR did, but times have changed since we had people like FDR around.

Some people will get angry and use that energy to do as you say above and some people will get depressed and have no energy to do anything and some people will just get paralyzed with fear and not be able to focus on anything other than just getting through the day. A lot of it really depends on your state of mental health before all of this happened and this will go a long way as to how one handles this what I call a depression (as in a variation of the Great Depression).

I believe that all Americans are getting more angry. As joblessness continues and those dip sticks in Washington continue to fight over everything. Plus with there being nothing for the 99'ers I know that I am very angry most of the time. So I'm not sure what it's going to take but at some point very soon. The anger will spill out into the streets and I will be there with everyone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is something that confirms your statement.

BTW, I agree the anger will spill out into the streets.

It sort of reminds me of a military strategy Stormin Norman talked about. I think it was called Shock and Awe, or something. The enemy (us, apparently) are bombarded into paralysis. There are so many simultaneous attacks, the enemy doesn't know which attack to address first. Then they give up out of sheer exhaustion.

I think many people are mad. Don't mess with Grandma and her SS check. She would skin any politician in a second! People are waiting until August 3. Then this is it! This gives them full permission to demonstrate and protest at will.

They especially had it with the Tea Party and what the Republicans are doing. Look at Wisconsin, 6 Republican State Senators will become unemployed when recalled next month!

We just need to get our confidence back! We need to send certain people packing. Perhaps burn down their mansions. They had destroyed homeless tents. This and other things will be revenged. Remember we are slow to anger, but once woken up. There is nothing stopping us. Besides the Americans love underdogs. Where is our best super hero!

20 days until the riots start, this is no joke!

In another thread on this forum is an article by Senator Bernie Sanders said.

"In my view a group of people in the House whose views represent a small minority of the American people are holding this Congress hostage. It is time for the American people to stand up and say, enough is enough; the function of the United States Congress is to represent all of our people and not just the wealthy and powerful."

Stand up and get angry. You deserve to be a slave if you don't! MAD mad no diffrince

I think of the reality of the situation every day and my thoughts are not exactly positive. I mean, everything is bad news. Am I right about this or is it just that I am depressed? Anyone would be depressed in this economy but maybe I am just more depressed than most.

If things escalate and there are riots in the street, I won't be one of the people out there. I'll be the one hiding under the covers. I guess I have moved past anger to resignation which I know is not a good thing.

I'd say there is 100% chance unless the government starts working for the people like they are supposed to instead of corporations.

I, too was there a year ago. I make myself get up and exercise everyday, get the chores done, right away, if I take to much time, I will fall on the sofa and go numb. I know I sound like I am lecturing, but I make sure I do this every day, much like I would have a schedule while working. It helps. I will not let this evil non-humans win. I will not give them my soul, they have taken everything and I mean everything else. Just give it a try. And, you both have all of us, don't ever, ever forget that. couth, I couldn't keep up the letter and the advocating without your help.

Please, while you're hiding under the covers, or as a diversion from it, contact your reps, or tweet them. Or retweet someone else's tweets, when you're too exhausted and beaten down to think straight. It's fighting back in a way that you can. I know about the dishes in the sink... normally I am a fanatic
about dishes being done. I've dragged myself out of bed with pneumonia, just because I couldn't bear the thought of dishes being left in the sink. I left my dishes in the sink for 2 days, (maybe 3)last week.

I came across this on TweetMyJobs
http://conference.tweetmyjobs.com/User/Confirmation/4a924180-ef05-4afe-865c-4a02e0513c7b

It's supposed to be a jobs creation conference, but I think it's all about Gov. Pawlenty's candidacy (Think Eric Cantor). Supposedly we can ask questions and vote on things.

I think we should all register and ask about HR589, where are the jobs, why all the partisanship and why the overt discrimination against 99ers? And anything else we can think of. We can suggest ideas. Maybe if a GOP-lover can claim an idea, it will pass.

I must say I am surprised that there are no demonstrations - no rallies - no civil unrest - the first major demonstration of the people was this year in Wisconsin - that is what needs to be happening throughout this country everyday, every week but I really believe that the government has been putting something into our drinking water in order to make us nice little complacent sheeple willing to believe anything the major media puts out. If people don't wake up soon, this country is going to loose everything - the dollar will be worth nothing and the citizens of the US will be relying on other countries to airdrop us our food.
