One of the things I wonder, and talk about in therapy, is how did I get to this place? I don't see other educated people at the food bank or in the food stamp office. Everyone seems to have built something from themselves- a marriage, a household, family, etc. I asked my therapist if I have some type of autism.

It would be very subtle, as I have no trouble with conversations, social interactions, etc. It's just what Dr. Phil describes as never getting any traction in life, nothing ever connecting and working.

I talked to my therapist about going on disability. Perhaps it is some type of PTSD from the abuse I grew up with at home. I am worried that there is something wrong that I am in this situation and others are not.

Does anyone here know about different types of PTSD or autism or Asperger's when things seem to be normal but somehow nothing ever seems to work out and I never get permanently connected into anything.

Other people seem to know how to turn their friendships and contacts into professional opportunities. You would be amazed to see my LinkedIn contacts list, yet I am still unemployed and on the edge.

Welcome to the Forum, walkbythelake. Believe me, you are NOT the only educated person at a food bank or applying for food stamps. Many members of this forum have college degrees, yet have not been able to find work in over 3 years. I am one of them. I have two degrees - one in Business Administration and one in Social Sciences, both from good east coast colleges. That, along with my experience and age (55) are what's holding me back in my job search. It has nothing to do with Autism (believe me), Aspberger's Syndrome of PTSD (yet). It is what gettheminNOVEMBER suggested to you - Anxiety, and maybe a little depression over the situation we are all living in right now. I have been a 99er since March 2010. I have been receiving food stamps since then - that is the only public assistance a middle-aged person who is not disabled can receive in my state. There are 7 - 8 million of us out there - you are not alone.
