Offered shelter by a stranger Empty Offered shelter by a stranger

One day I was at the food bank office and I witnessed the situation of a man having rescued a family from homeless. The family was a young couple with a newborn and a toddler. The husband has a low wage job. They were evicted by the landlord. The man took them to his house so that child protective service of the state government would not take away the children (because a homeless parent can be considered negligent). The man was there with the family arguing with the staff to get food help and utility help (to have the utility bill put in their name). The man was very handsome and articulate, but was very over-emotional and demanding. He was obviously upset and frustrated on behalf of the family.

I have spoken with the man a couple of times. He said that I could stay at his house instead of becoming homeless. However, he harangued a lot with a lot of political rants. He told me he had a law firm, but when I asked him about it he admitted he wasn't a lawyer, just a child advocate. I do not know how he gets his money, but he seems to be able to not work and spend all his time helping people. His website also contained a lot of political ranting. He is hardly even online. He said his house was in a particular community, that is pricey, but I looked him up in the state property owners database online and I see his name in another community that is nearby but that can be less prestigious in some areas.

Clearly I am worried about this, but no other human being has told me that I can stay with them to avoid homelessness.

What do you think? I am of the age that can be considered a "mature worker" but I look a little younger. This man is probably in his late 40s.

I asked someone in the community about him and that person thinks he is someone who experienced trauma as a child. He did ask he what it was that I experienced as a child - he seemed to know right off that my situation arises from a past of coming from a dysfunctional family.

I suggest maybe meeting with him a few times and perhaps get to know him a little better. If people in the community know him, maybe he isnt so bad. I cant really say because I dont know him, but he just sounds like a very passionate person who cares about people. I wonder if you could somehow do a background check on him. Just make sure he isnt prone to violence?

Its so hard, it is a nice offer but I dont blame you for being afraid to take him up on it. I really hope it works out for you, it seems like a good alternative for you if he checks out.

Also, check your County court records, and possible State if your State has the info online, some States do not. But, the County should have the justice courts and the superior court records on line. This will tell you if he has any harrassment claims or DUI's or anything where he has been served to appear before the Court to defend himself. May help you see more of his character, etc. Maybe he just likes to vent, but is harmless, but you never know because you don't really know the guy. Good luck with this.

Check the sex offender registry.
Verify that he indeed works for that law firm, if not:
Who does he work for?
I would be uneasy about someone that was asking about childhood stuff. Predators and sociopaths are pretty convincing and pretty controlling. They are smart and they like to scope out their victims.

It's possible that he's just a do-gooder. But better safe than sorry.
Can you run this by your local librarian and ask how to research it properly so you can make an informed decision?

Yeah check him out.

He could be a serial killer for all you know.

I understand being desperate and needing to take help.

If you are on disability there are strangers who do take disabled in and steal their check, I had friend that happened to.
