So, do our military guys and gals get only 20 or 26 weeks

How does this work for them? It's from Fox, but if they can't get retirement, and they can't re-enlist this is really going to add to this mess.

Force reductions are nothing new, I saw alot of this during my 20 years in the military and yes it's going to have a negative impact on the civilian job sector.

Yes, that's true, especially given the hiring preference for veterans.

On the other hand, if it comes down to street-fighting demonstrations, having a bunch of unemployed veterans on our side will be a huge advantage.

After all, it was veterans being ripped off on their veterans' benefits that marched on Washington in 1922. Of course, they wound up being machine-gunned on the steps of the Capitol building by a detachment of Army troops under a very young Douglas MacArthur, but that incident contributed to the labor unrest of the 1930's that won us many of the same workers' rights the GOP is stripping away right now.

Politicians of any party are massively ignorant creatures with incredibly short memories. As Lenin said, history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce.

With the way the GOP treated the 911 responders, I would not count on them to care at all.

As a 99er I would be rioting to get them benefits. They are mainly young men and women who have given many years of service and they are under the age of 25. As far as I am concerned, they better not even try that. And yes, look at how the Republicans fought to keep benefits from the first responders, with statements like, how do we know all these medical claims are from 9/11? Disgusting. They had no problem giving them the go ahead to enter those buildings and continue working and digging did they. They had no idea what those men were in for, but these are the same people who would abolish the "job killing EPA". They make me sick while they talk out of both sides of their mouths.

I am sure they will just get the same 26 weeks that everyone gets now. However, if they have technical skills they should be able to find something. In my experience it seems easier for military people, regardless of rank, skill, or length of service, to get a job than anyone else. This isn't a knock on the military but you certainly can't paint them all with one brush. ten years ago I worked with two ex-army guys. One was the smartest person I have ever met and the other was the dumbest.

Sometimes Vets do get preference, and that's fine with me, as long as they are as qualified as the other candidate. What does concern me, is that within the last week I have come across several articles stating certain segments of the jobless need help, are being helped, should be helped, etc. And of course, they do need and deserve help, as does everyone else in this boat.

I don't like the thought that we may be/are being pitted against one another, so we end up divided, and resentful of one another. We are not the problem. The forces that exist that are trying to pit us against each other, so we compete for crumbs, are the problem.

I noticed that too couth, I think we all need to be created as a whole, not divided.

I agree that there are "perks" for being a veteran, but nobody is knocking my door down to give me a job....

I believe that vets should get perks. They are the ones fighting for our country and put their lives in harms way. I don't think you all get enough "perks".

What I was agreeing with in my above post was the fact that the unemployed have been separated into groups. With a problem of this magnitude we should for the most part be treated as a whole and Washington should be treating this as an emergency.

There should be perks for being a Vet! I just don't like all of us being pitted against each other for resources. Especially as it is not necessary.

Uhh, yeah, let's not get into whether or not there should be. That's just begging for an argument, because there are points on both sides, and many Americans have very strong feelings against the wars in which the US military has been used for the last 2 decades. This is not like WW2 where everybody could agree on "defending America".

So let's just go from where we are, working together for help for all the unemployed in general, and the 99ers in absolute particular.
