Starting a new claim Empty Starting a new claim

Post by arcman Fri May 20, 2011 8:38 pm

I was laid off for almost 3 yrs. I've collected all regular unemployment and extensions. Got called back to work on a 5 day job at a power plant shutdown last week. Now laid off again. Should I file a new claim?
According to the Iowa unemployment guide, to qualify I must work in 2 different quarters. Which I didn't. Also, if I did qualify, I only worked 1 week. If my weekly benefit amount is determined by that 1 paycheck I probably wouldn't get much. Would I be stuck with that benefit amount through my yearly claim period?
Should I try to file a new claim anyway?

My best advice is to make the call and find out. I am not familiar with the rules in Iowa. You never know until you try. Best of luck. Let us know how you make out.

You can try but working 5 days will not qualify you for a new claim in any state.

That's kind of what I figured.
But, last summer I thought I was totally out of benefits and extensions and then they called me and said I could file on an old claim and get more extensions. It saved me.
Hard to tell anymore with all the changes they've made to unemployment the past few years. But, I think you are right. I need to work a lot more to qualify for a new claim.
