Ridiculous. This is why all my social media sites are locked (I don't have Tweeter).

They are not just using on line tactics to fire people, they are also finding new ways or causes to fire people.
Employers are being sneaky with it too; One minute you be chucking and laughing with them then, the next you being call in to pick up your separation notice.
They will read your posts or google your name and if it not professional or anything negative found let say, you don't have to report to work the next day because they left a message stating that you are fired.
If you are trying to get a job it is even worse.

They look at how long you been unemployed and by that they never call you in or read, scan your resume.
They keep running ads knowing that they have no jobs, but they sill post ads then, you apply and never respond to you.

I dunnooooo...I can see the grey area in this one. Social media specialist sounds like a more current title for a communcations specialist. If her tweet identified where she worked, that's not good, and if she was tweeting specifically as a reprsentative of the corporation, I'm thinking she exercised some very poor judgement with how she chose to word her tweet.

What would make the difference for me is whether she did this on her off hours and thought she was not identifying the company, or if she was doing this as a function of her job. If the former was the case, I'd say it's a forgivable boo-boo; if the latter, I think she really blew it.

JoanB, she was using her companies twitter account to post that message.

I can see why the boss would be upset though. Saying "Oh we are taking half of friday off to play golf." might not be the best message to send out when millions of people are unemployed and you are in charge of economic development.

Jeeze Louise! I'm usually the last one to take the employer's side, but her job title was Social Media Specialist! That's kinda like being the company Safety Director and falling off a stack of books piled on top of an office chair trying to reach something on top of a shelf. I know tweets are usually sponteous, but this was her job!

Is anyone concerned that employers are trolling social network sites to check up on potential employees? I know that i stand by everything that i've ever posted on any site but I admit that i am a bit concerned what they might take away from it. I still wouldn't retract anything but I dont want to be eliminated as a candidate for a job. I guess I'm old school and miss the days when my business and personal lives were totally separate.

I'm concerned about a lot of the things employers are getting away with these days. And I don't think they should be allowed to look at anyone's stuff that isn't out there for public viewing. And credit checks? That's outrageous!

I don't know if it's always true, or if just happened this way for me, but it seems like lately when I Google my name, more recent hits come up first. They just happen to be activites that are either neutral or positive by anyone's standards, like signing a funeral guestbook or volunteer and professional work I've done. Things that I'd rather not have an employer see are several pages down. So what I'm postulating is maybe the best thing to do is try to get more things about yourself online that might push the other stuff farther down on a search. Does anyone know if it really works that way?

Is this why they ask if you go by another name or changed it on a job application?

The question is our names should always be different for what you post. Never use a real name or something that is traceable. The person was a fool using a company tweeter account.

I agree with the name change. I don't use my name on posts & I did hear on a tech show that newer postings can push older possibly negative postings further down. However for the last few years, I google my name in every configuration every so often just to see what comes up. I dont like suprises and I want to see what potential employers might see if they google me. So far so good.

Well nfpexec, its not like another person with the same name as you can't exist. Unless it shows your date of birth on there (i am sure nothing will show your social), it would be hard to say its you.

I spell my name in a specific way and its obvious that the others with my name arent me based on age, location, profession, marital status (hypenated name) there's many things that show it to be a different person.

They needn't have fired her. They could have advised her to follow up her comment with the disclaimer that this was a team building event, and warned her to be more careful in the future.

I think credit checks should be off-limits, but the social media trolling is probably something they're going to do, on or off the record. For myself, anything I have submitted has been pretty clean, but I'm not well liked by some people, and it is always in the back of my mind that there's probably something somewhere that could affect my chances of employment.

Since I haven't had any luck job hunting, anyway, I have decided not
to worry about what anyone thinks, and I am putting whatever pops into my head, right out there in plain view. The problem is with human resources, not us.

Human Resources Department are really inhuman. They should not have that much power. Only for making things right, not using rules just to get rid of people. The police used to be known as Pigs when they stepped out of line. They should be Peace Officers first. HR should be there to hold up the peace and not be headhunters to fire people over silly stuff.

The whole Congressman Wiener thing was way blown out of proportion. Many things HR does is blown way out of proportion. Meanwhile the CEO can have millions in bonus for nothing, but the workers can't even feed there family.

As long as I don't threaten the US government and peoples lives, then go chill out.

Not to mention some ceo can pull all kinds of shady scams and bring the economy to its knees and never be prosecuted for what i believe are clear cut crimes and leave with millions of dollars that essentially was stolen.
