Crew of 42 has posted a new item, 'Robert Reich: Why the Unemployed Are Ignored'

Read this from former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich A sample from the
Huffington Post:

"... There's a third reason for Washington's inaction. It's not being talked
about -- which is itself evidence of the problem.

The unemployed are politically invisible. They don't make major campaign
donations. They don't lobby Congress. There's no National Association of
Unemployed [...]

I would wholeheartedly agree that Robert Reich would be a wonderful addition and would only seek to implement policies that would help the unemployed. I read his book last year "Aftershock" and highly recommend it. After reading his book I sent him a lengthy email, sort of like I tend to do in this forum from time to time. He was good enough to send me a personal response, which I have pasted in for your viewing pleasure. However, I would be very surprised if he elected to come back into public life, as he has a nice tenured professorship position going for himself at the University of California and extensively travels abroad .

Thanks for your very thoughtful (and lengthy!) email. I believe unemployment insurance should be extended as long as the national unemployment level is over 8 percent. Whether the Republican House will agree, however, seems doubtful – unless the economy goes into a “double dip” and they’re confronted with the specter of another recession.

Best wishes for the new year.

With staying on the topic of this thread, as good as an economist Mr. Reich was with regards to accepting and approving the extension of UI under the Clinton regime, his statements on crewof42 site today are jsu that, statements which have no direct influence whatsoever anyway we look at it, and unfortunately its just rhetoric that kind of puts blame on the 'others' jus like administration and politicians continue to do. I support this man because he has conducted research in past so is not just a masters level economist policy analyst, but at same time undersand his positioning with his verbage here based on holding a prior federal position.

He has been very vocal lately and appeared on the Sunday talk show circuit this weekend. Hopefully he will see this as a challenge, and if offered, take the job, if only through the end of President Obama's first term. Professor Paul Krugman is also a very good choice for this job. I am hoping that Obama doesn't stick to his past record of appointing Wall St. executives who don't know the first thing about middle-class America.

Obama has to get over this bipartisan crap. He has to stop appointing people from wall street to tell us how to fix the economy. He needs more radical people that will stand up and call for more regulation on wall street.

This is my beef with the president, be the liberal that I voted for.

Wall Street doesn't give a RATS behind about the middle class of the USA. Once President Skippy gets that through that granite noggin of his, the maybe he'll do something. Now with polls in favor of Romney, I'm scared, real scared.

I was an Obama supporter but he's let me down about this. When I saw his appoint a Wall Street executive who helped cause the breakdown I was livid and realized he doesn't get it. If a Republican gets in that would be devastating and you think it's bad now? it'll get worse.

I don't think these early polls reflect anything othere than a specific group being polled. He thinks the President is doing an awful job, okay, what's your plan Mr. Romney. Not one Republican has a plan other than further cutting taxes, which we all know, will create millions of jobs and wipe away the deficit NOT!!

Maybe the most accurate poll would be one from the citizens of Massachusetts, where he was a one term governor, and brought mandatory health coverage to the state. HYPOCRITE!! He used the people of MA as a stepping stone from being an exec with the US Olympics to his aspirations of being involved in national politics.
