More important, if you want a job how much time do you spend on getting your application, resume ect noticed. I just spent a week each on two jobs I really want-including going to the job locations. Dedicated at least 40 hours each... and still nothing more than "we will get back to you".
Think the in person contact killed me..... damn aged face!

This article illustrates the systematic problem many of us are facing when having to approach some of the 'gatekeepers' between ourselves and a job.

It began with the word 'slacking' in the headline. This is not a sympathetic article to the job-hunter and is highly suspect. This is a one-size-fits-all way of job searching.

This is why a lot of articles say that the best way is to avoid the HR person altogether. Though, it gets harder and harder to find out who is the actual hiring manager.

There is a lot confusion to what actually works when finding a job. I have heard both that cold-calling works and that it is a waste of time.

I have read that people in the HR field know there is a problem with how they judge people.

The April 2011 Reader's Digest had and article called "Get Hired, Not Fired! 50 Secrets Your HR Person Won't Tell You". I found it in my library. Very disturbing. I could not find the article online but this the supplemental article.

The problem I have with articles is that often they contradict things someone else said. As for how long I spend on a job, not long anymore. I am tired of spending an hour filling out an application and/or various testing only to be rejected. If I see a job that fits me to a t and I have to send them a resume I'll put it things that I believe will help me. For instance I have been seeing jobs listed through the local Catholic diocese. Being that I am a practicing Catholic I will mention that in the cover letter.

Regarding the whole cold calling versus applying I've done both and while in general cold calling has worked better, this is mostly for smaller companies. I've gotten interviews when I called a smaller company. A larger one has always told me to apply online or send them a resume.

Good idea, DesperateInRI.

If people cannot obtain the main article. I will write a synopsis of major points of the other 50 things. Due to copyright, I can't post the article verbatim.

These HR people in this article make me sick. Arrogant and immature. Their day is coming when they will have to look for work and I hope karma bites them bigtime. They are unneeded. Simple. They are the reason it is impossible to talk to a real person, manager, etc. and shake hands and get a job.

Many companies are starting to outsource HR jobs so the day will come when they will be with us. I hate outsourcing but get a little pleasure in this one. But yes, HR people are often so greedy and nasty. I've gone to a few interviews and left in tears because they were mean to me.
