Just 26 percent of US teens held jobs last summer, the lowest youth employment rate since World War II, and this year youth advocates are scrambling to fund job opportunities amid federal cutbacks and a shaky private-sector recovery.

msnbc did a piece on this on Sunday morning. Part of the reason they are not able to find jobs was two fold here in the mid-atlantic. 1. many older workers have taken the hours and don't leave at the end of the summer and 2. many placed that would have hired in previous years are not staying open as late or opening as early and some depending on area, don't have weekend hours if it's not busy enough, where they used to in the past. Many of the small mom and pops are gone and those that are not feel they can get by with the staff they have. Even our local Lowes and Home Depot did not bring in the seasonal staff for this season. Only hires were the lot attendants for the big sale days and I make it my business to speak to them. The three at Lowes and two at Depot said it's good in May/June, but they expect to only be called in July/August if needed and they will then start up again late August through beginning of October. Really sad.
