Service providers mad at unemployed and homeless

Post by endlessPAIN on Fri Apr 15, 2011 7:10 pm

I've seen this happen to so many people, myself included. So say you are homeless. You want to work, but finding a job is hard because there aren't really many jobs in the first place. You've been at different shelter systems and sometimes during the day you visit a case worker who knows how to refer you to different agencies or whatever. If the case manager sees you can't find work after a few months they will get upset with you. They will threaten to you if you don't do something soon you will lose certain privileges into their facilities. Facilities can be places to shower, wait or do laundry. Sometimes they have phones or computers too. It doesn't matter if you are disabled they still want you to work and leave. The state employment offices are usually mad if you go there and ask for help. All they can do is let you use a computer and search their website for jobs. They may be able to refer you to a training program or let you use the fax or printer. Then on top of that human services or veteran's affairs get mad at you for just being around and needing a hand. The public is pissed at you for loafing and needing food at the food banks or shelter feeds. Anything you do is basically a nuisance to others. HR departments get mad because too many people apply for one job. The police are mad if you are sitting in the park or loitering. If you need medical help the hospitals are especially pissed if you go to the ER. You'll be the last helped and first booted out. This disrespect happens to everybody on the streets. Experienced people avoid service providers because they will mess with you and play head games for sure. Then the police are mad when you won't go to the shelters or refuse this abusive "help."

They just want their caseload to look good. Why is it that people in this country refuse to accept the fact that there are no jobs?? You are not a nuisance endlessPain, I think people are just scared that somehow if they have to look reality in the face, they won't be able to walk around in lala land anymore. Soon, our society is not going to be able to hide this anymore, because the cities are going to be inundated with homless. I will pray for you. BTW, if you can afford to join a gym, then you can hang there and shower, etc. You can do this for about 20 bucks a month. Also, the library.

Unfortunately Im hearing more and more stories of this nature. This is horrible. Those working or those who turn a blind eye are clueless to the suffering and pain that people are having now.
Folks who once led normal "Middle class" lives are now thrown into this mess and are being stepped on left and right.

I am convinced though, that more and more of the "general" public now are becoming aware of just how deep this recession is.

endlessPAIN-
My friend, I really feel , in your post, what seems to me like utter frustration with your situation. I am trying to find a way to put my feelings into words, but here goes-
all the "anger' you are picking up on is, I think, your own feelings of shame for your situation. Don't get me wrong- I am in the same situation- it's SO degrading to go the King's Harvest soup kitchen here in my hometown, I'm hungry, but I can't help feeling like I somehow don't deserve to be there. It took me awhile to "swallow my pride", so to speak. Sometimes I think matters are complicated by people who actually WANT to be homeless, what in my old neighborhood we called "transients". They are very distrustful of everyone and everything, and refuse to look for work, preferring to be on the fringes.
People like us are so different, we don't choose to be where we are. I wonder, have you ever thought of volunteering at the soup kitchen? I mean, we have time on our hands, and you will be doing a service to others. Sometimes, if we can put others before ouselves, it makes the pain diminish.
I am not trying to downplay the fact that you are getting resentment from those who should be helping you, but you can't let it drag you down, rather, use that to lift yourself up. My prayers are with you, friend. Keep your chin up.

My heart goes out to all of you who are homeless...I pray for you all everyday.

I cannot even begin to express my feeling about this. There are no words to describe my feelings about what exactly is happening to good people in this country. I can say I feel intense sadness for those effected and immense disgust and anger for those who could but refuse to help. It is truly unfair.

Do you know that there are a few countries that will not allow homelessness? If the homeless person has family, the family HAS to take them in. They will do every thing they can to make sure everyone has a home to go to whether it be just a room in a strangers home or boarding house etc. This is how it should be. NO ONE in this day and age should have to be homeless. Our government needs to really make some changes and has a lot of soul searching to do.

God bless and ongoing prayers Praying

Also, many of these people are hanging on by a thread. They are maybe 1 more mistake at work away from themselves being unemployed and possibly winding up homeless as well. Then, they can work 6AM to midnight with no overtime pay, like they're doing now all they want. It still won't save their job! This is the resentment you're feeling, and the reality these people are scared to face.

Most people who somehow avoided losing their jobs and being immersed in this mess are reluctant to acknowledge a huge problem exists here. For fear that this could happen to them next. Add to it President Obummer, a Socialist, has the 20 million folks out of work long term right where he wants them. Under govt control, dependent on govt social payment programs. This jerk wont stop until he has decimated the Middle Class so that it does not exist anymore, and is instead replaced with people dependent on some form or another of Government rationing of funds. In the meantime, you and me, who have no income, have no choice but to accept these social payment programs for as long as it lasts, in order to survive day to day.

I agree that the service providers, and people with jobs, avoid looking at or understanding our situation because they know that they are not far from being in our shoes one day. The way this economy is going, no job is safe.

I don't agree with this situation being the President's fault. What can he do? He doesn't have the power to do anything without Congress and they have blocked every attempt to provide business with incentives for hiring. Every emergency declaration a president in this country has made has been overturned by the courts. It is up to Congress to help us and I don't think Obama would "veto" any bill that would create jobs and help America's neediest people.

Edit: This should have been my first response to the post.
President Obama did not put the country in this economic turmoil. It was a "legacy" left to him from 8 years of the Bush Administration.

It would be amusing if it wasn't so sad that the people most damaged by right wing/republican/ tea party policies always blame the only political party that is trying to help them.

If it hadn't been for "Obummer" (is this still funny?), you would have been "free" a long time ago. Your unemployment benefits would have run out after 26 weeks. You wouldn't have a job (still). The unemployment rate would have been 26% just like when Hoover tried to balance the budget during a depression in the 30's and you would be "free" to live out on the streets.

If the president was a socialist this problem would have been solved by now and we would all be back to work. Instead we have to pander to the capitalism that killed us and hope it "works this time". The bankers and CEOs are making more than they did before the recession and will dig the same ditch again.

Wow, DesperateinRI, you are have been drinking the Kool Aid far too long. This President and his Administration are quite contrary and perhaps one of the most anti-business Administrations in the History of this Country. Which sadly anti business translates into NO Job Growth for folks like you and I to be able to get back into the work force and be productive and contributing members to Society. One glaring example of this President's anti business agenda is Health Reform. I have several Associates who own their own small businesses. And they say that right now they are holding off on adding work force, work force that they could use, but for the fact that the cost of these employees due to Health Reform is uncertain, pending the final outcome of the Reform Legislation. Estimates from the govt have it $750 an employee per month, but we know add easily 2-3 times any estimate given by the Govt.
Add to it, that both sides of the Aisle still have a love affair with outsourcing of work to India and China, due to the fat dividend checks it puts in their pockets and their Wall St Cronies who hold much Legislative and Voting power. Which that again, is not a Partisan issue. It exists on both sides.

ITS TIME TO STOP BLAMING BUSH!!! SEEMS OBUMMER HIMSELF IS STILL STUCK ON THE BLAME BUSH MANTRA, AS RECENT AS HIS SPEECH LAST WEEK ABOUT THE BUDGET. THIS JACKWAGON OBUMMER HAS HAD 2 1/2 YEARS SO FAR TO WORK ON THE ECONOMIC ISSUES. I UNDERSTAND ALL ISSUES WOULD NOT BE RESOLVED BY NOW. BUT ITS WORSE, EVERY 'POLICY' THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS INSTITUTED HAS INSTEAD GONE IN THE COMPLETE WRONG DIRECTION!

Its very disappointing to see this website is a veiled blogosphere for the Liberal Dems. I had hoped it would not have been Politics.

It isn't about politics. It is about support, advocacy and helping the unemployed find the resources they need to survive and find a job.

Unfortunately, there is one particular party that has blocked every effort to assist us. That is a fact.

We can not control what are members political views maybe. Considering this is an Unemployment website and how the right have treated the unemployed, are you really surprised that things may seem to lean a certain direction.

I believe people should avoid "the system" as much as possible, having seen enough of it for myself. I was abused at a food pantry, because we did the "horrible" sin of daring to show up a third time in one year during a short month, and college educated husband and I were told we would have to take a a budgeting class to qualify for 2 bags of dented cans, and cheap boxes of macaroni and cheese. I seriously think last time they purposefully put the most dented cans they could find in the bags, I am not talking mildly dented but dents smashing half way into the cans, and we are talking botulism city. I have good friends who I would turn to before any social workers. I used to think don't burden friends but in the social services world, you will be abused. Ive never been homeless but was poor enough during my 20s and when I was becoming disabled that abuse was the name of the game. I understand why the poor avoid the shelters and the social workers. The smart homeless people hide their homelessness and put themsleves on the mercy of friends and family. I know some who are wholly desperate don't have that choice but the "system" is no friend, Ive heard enough of the horror stories.

For the people fighting about politics. Both Bush and Obama are the same thing. Read my post on Politics. The sooner more people figure that out, the more this country will take the blindfold off.

Right on Springflowers. There are some kind churches etc ( a few), but the absolute power that the system has makes it so easy to look down on people, humiliate them when we are already embarrassed enough, and treat people like trash. I am tired of being told to budget-I taught math and was always so tight that I made it through much longer than others. I have NOTHING else to cut out, you can budget all day but you still have to have some money or it doesn't mean squat. Like I'm out throwing money around or something.
