Re: Gabrielle Giffords Shows More Progress In Recovery
I saw this, as well. While I wish her all my hopes for a speedy and 100% recovery, the media is sensationalizing her recovery process. "She sat up and sang 'American Pie.'" What's next? They're going to report that she's singing her "ABC's?"
My apologies if I sound a bit cynical but the media doesn't even pay this kind of attention to actual people who are suffering from similar situations regarding their medical conditions. It sickens me that the media will elevate someone up above the rest simply because they're "public figures" or rich or popular.
The media needs to highlight everybody else if they're highlighting one specific person. Why not do an investigative report about how stem cell research could people like Senator Giffords? If you ask me, that would seem to be a better human interest story than focusing on just one person, and it would open everybody's eyes about the standards of health care in our country.

One of the Representative from RI has spoken out many time regarding stem cell research. He was left a quadraplegic after a gun accident when he was 16. Stem Cell Research would help him, and millions of others. That is never reported either.
I think the public is interested in Rep. Giffords' recovery just to remind themselves that miracles still happen in this day and age. It keeps hope alive.

Re: Gabrielle Giffords Shows More Progress In Recovery
The one person who has really put a face on this touchy subject has been Michael J Fox, someone who suffers from Parkinson's Disease. Before him, Christpher Reeves had put a face on the issue.
While there's no question that we should allow stem cell research, I do think there should be severe restrictions in how it should be handled. Scientists just get too carried away with abusing new research and if not strictly regulated, could result in scientists creating cloned humans.
I'm sorry, but the world is bad enough without having 32 million unemployed Americans instead of just 16 million.
