Forget Unemployment Extensions, Cutbacks More Likely Empty Forget Unemployment Extensions, Cutbacks More Likely

A combination of state and federal programs has offered up to 99 weeks of unemployment benefits to jobless Americans in the recession and subsequent recovery. That coverage is beginning to unwind as cash-strapped states move to reduce their share of benefits and other states become ineligible for federal programs. That’s partly how the jobless benefits program is supposed to work — 99 weeks of unemployment insurance weren’t meant to be offered indefinitely.

I think you all have it wrong. You expect another handout.

But what I think will work is

We want to work but we can't even take an Interns job without losing our benefits.....change the law and help up keep a job at the top of our resume.

Think outside the box

I think you have it wrong. Busted my butt for over twenty years and got crap when I left. I ain't asking for a hand out, not my style buddy. You think I want to live like this. Hell, I'll clean sewers if I could find a job. Nobody wants to hire an older person. Have you tried to find a job lately. Applied for anything you see that is open. Nothing out there, my friend. How long you been unemployed anyway. Everybody says take what you can get but there aint nothing to get anymore. At least around here.

I've been thinking outside the box but there ain't no room left to think. What the heck do you want me to intern. Thats slavery. Like I'm gonna work for nothing just to put it on a job appplication. Got better things to do with my time, like look for a real job that pays. Can't live on air. Get real buddy, when you are done thinking in your box, let us know what you come up with. I'm all out of options here.

I don't think you are really out of work. You wouldnt be talking this crap if you were. Go back to your box and do more thinking.

This is my point...we have tried everything....this week i am selling as much crap as i can and will buy an ipad....lets see if they still discriminate when i show those 20 somethings that i know how to use it....

And quit with the intern nonsense you voted for it "change" got elected to the white house....but working for free was not the change you expected, but its what we've got.

I drive 95 miles round trip as an intern and get gas and tolls...why its in my field and at the top of the resume...will it work who knows....but it you are going to work for free it better be relevant to your resume

I mean if you really wanted to get an extension of the 99 weeks, demanding a change in the law so you can work a part time job or at an "intern" no pay job and not lose your benefits, i don't think it would be considered another handout.(by those nasty repubs)

Its the perception you want to work for your unemployment extensions but in your field to keep your resume fresh. see the difference?

Nobody wants to hire an older person. Have you tried to find a job lately.

You are obviously not a long term unemployed or anyone who has a family or a mortgage or any of those other things in life are you? Or you had a huge amount of savings, not all do. Most DO NOT actually. Myself included.

So with that being said you are living on driving 100 miles a day for a job for free? scratch
I guess we should all be so lucky to be able to do that.
If you are then please share your good fortune here with the rest of us.

So the new job is one to Drive 100 miles a day for free to hope to maybe get a job that wont probably wont cover your travel expenses.
SO in the meantime we do what?? You dont think we would do these jobs if we were still covered by UI? No one likes this life we live. It gets really old really quick when you see yourself losing everything you worked for your whole life.

So with all that said, please elaborate here if I missed something. I feel like I must of missed something on this one. We should work for free? It reminds me of a certain words that starts with S.
Now, a shared work program Im all for one; which you work and are compensated by both the Govt and the Company you work for.
If not this leads to random hiring by companies who will pay workers 50% or less of what they made before. Once again the Corps win and the workers lose if this should happen.

At what point do we as citizens stand up to these corps, companies and the government? 50% or less of previous wages? We all know who is going to make out in all of this. Meanwhile, corps will continue to lay off to hire the "off shore candidates for 10% of current employee salaries or less, and it all starts again.

This is a vicious cycle we are in now.

My husband and I have already sold everything we could sell, only we weren't lucky enough to be able to buy an Ipad, we used the money for some things our kids needed and to pay bills.

I am trying really hard to understand where you are coming from...are you still receiving benefits?

Do you have children and how long have you been unemployed? I am asking because you cant possibly know what we go through unless you have walked in our shoes. The 99ers I know of make job hunting a full time job. There is nothing out there and things arent getting any better.
