"To calculate this "economic security" income, the study's authors certainly didn't assume a lavish lifestyle. They considered basic needs--housing, food, utilities, health care, child-care, and transportation--plus the cost of modest saving for retirement and a small surplus for emergencies. (At at a time when economic "shocks" are increasingly common, that's an essential part of financial security.) They don't factor in some things many of us take for granted, like entertainment or eating out.

The result? To achieve economic security, a single parent with two children needs an income of just over $30,000 a year--nearly twice the federal minimum wage--while a two-income household needs almost $68,000.

In other words, most of the jobs of the future aren't likely to pay enough to offer the kind of stable, middle-class existence that for much of the 20th century was seen as the American birthright."

This is a sad reality of where things are now in regards to wages. Top it off with all the programs to help those who need it being slashed by the GOP, how are folks going to survive? Wages go down and cost of living goes up...

This was a good article and the comments even better, I couldn't find ONE Neo-Con thug spewing their crap. This is Nothing MORE than impoverished SLAVERY that is being FORCED on us all.

I'am the one that quit my job on Feb 17, because I was so burned out, I absolutely hated it. Well I started a new job 4 days ago. The only reason I was able to get this job is because it is in the same industry and i know people that work at this company, so I bypassed the whole screening process. I hate to say it but most people I know got jobs because they know someone in a company (very sad). I am making considerably less money then at my last job, but I like this job,so I had to trade and make less money for a much more rewarding job.

Those were my two choices, stay in a job where I made good money that I hated or make less money but like it and be able to get up in the morning to do it. My husband still is unemployed since July 2010, unfortunately, so our situation will be very precarious if he does not get a job by the time his unemployment runs out.

Congrats on the new job...I am glad you like it! It makes life much better if you like where you work. Hopefully your husband will find work by the time his benefits run out.

Praying for all of us.... Praying
