New Government Numbers Show 90 Percent of Newly-Created Jobs Go to Men Empty Women Lag Behind Men in Economic Recovery

Post by Jobless_in_Ma Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:28 pm

Of the 1.3 million jobs created in the last 12 months, some 90 percent have gone to men, according to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Women have gained just 149,000 jobs.

I believe the real unemployment rate is between 25 and 30%. affraid They are not doing anything about it because they can't. The only way to show them we have the power to decide who is in office is to vote. No more of this deer caught in the headlights act. Voters need to WAKE UP!

This interview was on ABC's Nightly News with Diane Sawyer. Dawn also appeared on MSNBC's Dylan Radigan show yesterday regarding discrimination in the workforce against the unemployed.

Thank you, Dawn!

There is so much discrimination against women and it's sick. I've been discriminated many times, including at my last job where I was paid less than less qualified males.

New Government Numbers Show 90 Percent of Newly-Created Jobs Go to Men Empty Jump to Conclusions

Post by 54andpoor Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:29 pm

Keep in mind that men were hit harder by layoffs than women. At my former company, all 9 employees who were laid off were men even though women made up over half of the workforce. Even the women managers whose departments had a 50% drop in sales weren't laid off. Is there a analysis of the types of jobs that have been created?

I've heard that about the overweight women and it's wrong.

You mentioned that whole men have a family to support and nothing makes me sicker than when employers assume because we are women we aren't supporting families. In many cases the woman is the bigger breadwinner. I could write a whole paper on this topic (in fact I have) because as women we are discriminated against routinely in everything. Products that are the same (like razors) are sold at a higher price to women (I buy "male" versions because of this). Women are brainwashed from an early age that our careers will come second to a man's, even when we are educated. Women are told we must like certain things because we are women. I've gotten people mad because I refuse to attend women only bridal/baby showers and if I marry I will have a coed shower.

In fact right now I am arguing on another site (a dating site) because there's no way I'd ever give up a full time career job (once I get one again) to be a stay at home mom. If I wanted this I could have it now. I never aspired to traditional gender roles and while I don't care if others do, on the other hand I expect them to respect my views too.

My point being that because of these traditional sexist gender roles many employers assume all women are the same and we aren't. I am ALWAYS asked if I have kids even indirectly. I don't but if I did I it wouldn't affect my job. Yep I've had employers tell me they hate hiring women because "they'll just quit to stay at home". I'd never have kids unless it was with a guy who wouldn't expect me to give up my career. Otherwise I am fine being a career single person. I feel I have as much right having a career and a family as a man.

Women's clothing is also not made to last, unlike men's which is made to handle more rugged conditions.

My mother (RIP), fought with a group of women against the State board of Higher Education here in Oregon, for wages of women faculty professors. They did not win the case, but it was an eye-opener for me, who volunteered as a file clerk for the case. In most all cases, women professors were paid less than their male counterparts within the Higher Education school system at the time. And I assume that it has not changed in the years since.

Your mother sounds like she was a great woman. Unfortunately I've seen this often as well because while in grad school I worked on the paper and we got a list of how much professors were making. The disparity was astounding and women are often denied tenure to begin with. Women with Ph.Ds and masters were paid less than guys with a bachelors! I considered going for my Ph.D a few years ago, but saw the pay off would not be worth it. As it is the two years I spent in grad school getting a masters has not paid off either.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with the career center employee while looking for a job. I went to the grad school's career center to have them help me with my resume. I noticed they were highlighting certain skills I had versus other skills. I asked them why and she said "so it will help you find admin jobs like receptionist. When I told her I didn't want those jobs she told me it was a good way to get in a door. When I asked if she would do the same to men she said "men don't do those jobs". I was astounded that they would push women with masters degrees into jobs like receptionist but would never do that to men.

The "Mancession"

It's been pointed out before that that recession has disproportionately hurt men, who are more likely to work in cyclically sensitive industries like manufacturing and construction. Women, on the other hand, are overrepresented in more downturn-resistant sectors like education and health care.
But I wonder what the numbers are for the 55 and older crowd.

Women are also dominate in retail, more women than men hold retail managerial positions, except in some big box stores. Women dominate the majority of healthcare related jobs, care-givers especially. Wages for male caregivers are lower than females in the same type of positions.

Oh yeah 'jobless in MA'? Well if its any consolation, I am a man and I am not part of that 90% you speak of. And I do not see any reason to believe I am going to be any time soon.
And like it or not, facts being facts. I am 100% for equal opportunity for anybody. But simple math is that with more women in the workforce, there is simply more competition for jobs overall. Now add in the outsourcing to India and China as further depletion of jobs....there you have why there are so many, so many long term unemployed people. Even just 10 years ago, layoffs happened. Bummer. You go look for work, and within a few months or so you'd have a job. But back then there was more margin to soak up those laid off. Now with just that many more people in the work force, and outsourcing,.....that safety net is gone. Not very complicated to understand why we have the predicament we are in today.

I am a man with a family to support. My lateral at my last job that I got laid off from last March, a women of about the same age as me, late 30's...never married, lives at home still, never had a mortgage or any real World responsibility.....she kept her job. Despite many complaints from other staff about her attitude, and managements willingness to let her do whatever she wanted out of fear that she may claim discrimination if they reprimanded her. The men managers were afraid of her, very simply. So they laid me off instead, as I was the easier target.
I disagree with your assessments here. I think America has lost its respect for the building block of any Society...The Family Unit...as they teach in any Sociology 101 Class.
My Wife, who could be described as overweight as you said above, is a teacher. And she does quite well, and thankfully she has, or this debacle I am now going through of being out of work for a year now (as of today to be exact) would be even far worse than it already is. But then again, everyone here in NJ hates the school teachers too, thinking that $50k a year to essentially raise their kids for them (as nobody raises their own kids anymore, they expect the teacher to do that for them) make them a 'Millionaire'.
I leave you with this also. We were supposed to adopt a domestic baby last year. But my layoff put a very quick end to that plan, as the $'s for the adoption are now saved to survive the day to day. Who wins in that situation? Not us, and certainly not some kid who maybe would've been given a shot at living a good life with good caring Parents.
