The Rules have Changed: The Unemployed are NOT addicted to Unemployment!
The blogosphere was once inundated with posts and letters from 99ers who laid out their circumstances in simple and heart-wrenching terms. Many of them described being worried that they would never have a job again, because they were simply too old to rehire. But the message never caught on, because the message from the most popular news network in the country was that 99ers should be ashamed of themselves for becoming hooked on unemployment and failing to get a job.

Re: The Rules have Changed: The Unemployed are NOT addicted to Unemployment!
Well, their logic is lost. If we were addicted to unemployment, when ours ran out, we would have all found the magic jobs that are SO available. I have been a 99er since last May, NO BENEFITS, NO JOBS. Not from lack of trying, but if I am addicted, why am I not employed. Oh, I forgot, I have to compete with at least 5 people, but the jobs available in this area, honestly, I am not qualified for. I am not a nurse, medical tech, Electrical Engineer or truck driver. For the last 6 months, that is what is available. I have applied to secretarial work, housekeeping work, retail work, sandwich maker and domestic. No responses. 1 interview last August and nothing since.
So, what exactly are we addicted to, now that they have ruled out we are all drug addicts, we are now addicted to not working?? How did we let this happen, were some really that angry at the President that the likes of Mr. Boehner and Mr. Cantor seemed like a good deal. Because, in addition to their lack of human kindness, they are just smuggly going through the days ignoring what most of the American people want accomplished. We are right back where we were this time last year. Nothing getting done, nothing.

Re: The Rules have Changed: The Unemployed are NOT addicted to Unemployment!
This article supports the urgency of extending unemployment benefits and bases their viewpoint on actions taken by Congress in past recessions. Our Legislators and the media need to be reminded of these facts:
America has never before failed to extend unemployment benefits when the unemployment rate was as high as it is today. But America has also never found itself in an economic crisis that has lasted as long as today’s — except the Great Depression, of course, which was the event that caused us to invent unemployment benefits in the first place. Unfortunately, in our country’s modern world of flash-news, the crisis that faces the 99ers has outlasted its usefulness in the news cycle. Unemployment benefits are a problem that, while they are still there, have become interesting in the face of Japanese tsunamis, Scott Walker, and the liberation of the Middle East.
