Jobs view from the streets Empty Jobs view from the streets

Banks are again booming, Wall Street stocks are soaring and economic fundamentals appear on the firmer footing of modest, hesitant growth. But one key sector of the US economy has proved almost immune to the recovery: unemployment. The official unemployment rate in America still stands at about 9 per cent, representing about 13.7 million people.

But that headline figure fails to take into account the long-term unemployed who have despaired and stopped looking for jobs. It also does not include those forced to take part-time jobs while they are seeking full-time employment. When those numbers are added, the number of unemployed and under-employed Americans soars to more than 20 million. In California alone there are about 1 million jobless.

I hate the phrase, we are not looking. Who did they interview that told them we are all sitting around NOT LOOKING? We can't afford NOT to be looking. The real problem is, it's equally as productive to look out the window for a job as it is to be registered with agencies, temp firms and on-line job boards. There are no jobs for people looking to make a living on a full time basis.

What does not looking really mean?? Well to drive around aimlessly burning up gasoline you cannot afford only to be told to go home and get online. Well I'm not looking then. I can't afford to drive around. I have done it for hundreds of miles and it's always the same drill-we only accept applications online. I am registered with all the temp agencies and check in with them often, I send out countless resumes with no response. I clip coupons, cook from scratch (if it's cheaper sometimes it isn't) and have cut everything out-cable, any sort of entertainment-BUT if I cut out internet then I'll really be up the creek- and some people have the nerve to say if you can afford the internet you must not be that bad off!! Try applying for jobs with no online access and the library here has its hours cut to the point where there are lines for the few hours they are open! These people make me sick.

There is no point in driving around looking for jobs. Businesses don't accept walk in apps anymore. Even at the McDonald's near me you have to apply online. The managers won't even talk to you. Evil or Very Mad

So true Desp. I have not walked in anywhere, even places with help wanted signs in the window, I get a slip of paper with a company website telling me where to apply. I have only had one place take my resume when I walked in and that was a temp agency, who I have never heard from.

The other places told me to email the resume.
